THE ROLE AND THE POWER OF MEDIA IN PROMOTING GOSPEL MUSIC BY DEJI IRAWO

When God said that we should go into the world and preach the gospel, He obviously knows that we might not be able to travel to every place in the world. Yet as musicians and gospel artists, God has given many of us the vision to take our music to the world. He obviously knows that with the media, we will one day have the whole world in our pocket. So the world is just a TV station away, or a radio station away, or an internet away.

As the Woodclef website was unveil, they contacted a media expert, Mr. Deji Irawo, to further educate us on “The Role and the Power of Media in Promoting Gospel music”. We hope that as you read this write up, you will catch the vision to take your lamp which you probably have hidden under a bushel and put it on a lamp stand so that the whole world could see your light and glorify your Father in heaven. You need to promote your music.

Deji Irawo writes…

The essence of Gospel music is the good news of the message of Christ creatively packaged with rhythm, beats, instrumentation and excellence from the perspective of the artiste who aims to pass a unique message across to his target audience. To us Gospel music is an innovative and creative expression of the words of Christ to world that must hear the message of the gospel.one of the most significant instructions to us his disciples before he ascended to heaven was to ensure the message is preached globally in order to ensure that as many souls as possible are won into the kingdom of God.

Gospel music as music in general has the capacity to shape lives and influence its audience with its content. The influence can be either positive or negative depending on the genre and aim of such music. A core responsibility of gospel music is thus obviously to influence on a global scale as many people as possible for the kingdom in a world filled with over 7 billion people and counting. It therefore goes without saying that Gospel music must be strategically positioned to reach identified target audiences on the short term and also achieve a carefully synchronized long term plan of influencing a global audience with the message of the love of God.

Gospel music must then see the media as a strategic partner in this awesome assignment in view of the desired result in terms of influence and also in breaking physical barriers that hinder the gospel being preached manually in situations such as huge population size like china and India, religious intolerance in places like china,Indonesia, major parts of the middle east and logistics challenges in places like Iceland, the rain forests and other parts of the world with difficult topography etc.

The media serves as a bridge between the artiste and the audience at any scale. It therefore follows that the media plan is just as detailed, rebust, strategic and funded as much as the music project itself. The bible clearly says no one lights a candle and hides it under a bushel. The media thus becomes a partner in the clearly defined agenda of spreading the message of Christ via music to a lost world. Gospel music requires the power of media in its desire to make Gospel music the dominant and most influential genre globally. Gospel artistes must thus have a strategically developed media plan alongside the music project itself to ensure that desired goals are met.

The media is thus critical to Gospel music in view of the many advantages a well-executed media plan can achieve for a music project these can include mass awareness for the album, song or artiste, publicity for an idea, project, and event or vision the artiste is passionate about. These and the many more results of effective media lead to huge followership and influence for the message in the song or album project and the artiste. Large content sales for the artiste in cd sales, downloads, tours, endorsements, brand opportunities and many more. All these put together on a large scale create a vibrant Gospel entertainment industry with a global influence necessary to shape the 21st century and beyond for God.

Its therefore vital for the gospel music industry to research into how we can use the media effectively to achieve the many goals outlined per season so we can evaluate our progress and see what we require in cases of short –falls. I personally believe that as we call attention to the message of Christ and the many projects we undertake for the kingdom, it will be inevitable that we as carriers of the message will not be blessed in the process with the resultant influence used to benefit mankind and ourselves as we journey through life.
